Earthquakes are the vibrations of Earth’s surface which is caused by movements in Earth’s outermost layer. Earthquakes have been the key reason for demise of many bronze cultures. For instance, at the city of Megiddo (now part of present-day Israel) conducted research that a massive earthquake may have devastated the city, leading to the sandwich-like layers found in excavations.

Why Do Earthquakes Occur?

Despite the fact that the Earth looks like a solid surface, it’s actually extremely active just under the surface. The Earth is made of four primary layers: solid inner core, outer core, a solid crust and nearly solid mantle.

Earth layers

The lithosphere is a solid crust, stiff layer of the mantle that make up a region. It’s actually created with the biggest puzzle pieces called tectonic plates and tectonic plates are constantly shifting as they drift around on the viscous, or slowly flowing, mantle layer below.

This non-stop movement occurs stress on Earth’s crust. It leads to cracks when the stresses get too big. When tectonic plates move, it also occurs movements at the faults. An earthquake is the unexpected movement of Earth’s crust at a fault line.

The human has been trying to build up bigger and taller, but still struggling to protect itself from natural disasters. One of these devastating natural disasters is called earthquakes, and civil engineers in many parts of globe must consider this construction threat. So, in this world there are lot of known techniques that can protect from dangers. William Harris has compiled a 10 list to resist earthquakes.

How do Smart Technology Measure Earthquakes?

The energy comes from an earthquake visits through Earth in vibrations called seismic waves. Earthquakes are detected by scientific smart instruments which is called seismometers. A seismometer technology detects seismic waves below the instrument and records them as a series of zig-zags process. Scientists can determine the intensity, location and time of an earthquake from the information recorded by a seismometer. This record also provides information about the rocks the seismic waves traveled through. However, this smart technology can prevent the damage of earthquakes.
